QUALITY OF LIFE

Belton, established in 1850 and the county seat for Bell County , is more than a home for the county government.  It is a town that is experiencing revitalization.  Belton, with a population of more than 15,500, has successfully preserved a rich and colorful history.  The county courthouse, built in 1886, underwent a renovation to restore it’s original structure complete with a bell tower.  This project was completed in 2000.

Since then, Belton has completed a number of projects designed to enhance the city’s appeal to tourists and to improve the quality of life for Beltonians.  In 2006, three significant projects were completed.

The Bell County Museum completed a $1 million expansion project.  The project linked the 6,000 square foot Carnegie Building to the Guffy Building next door, adding an additional 10,000 square feet to the museum.

The Nolan Creek Hike and Bike Trail was completed.  The 1.5 mile trail follows along Nolan Creek with ten pocket parks positioned along the trail.  Future plans include linking the trail with area community’s trails.

The Harris Community Center , which is adjacent to the Hike and Bike Trail, opened.  The center has several meeting rooms, kitchen and six classrooms.  In addition,

Belton has applied for a federal grant with the Texas Department of Transportation to renovate and restore the old Cotton Gin in downtown Belton for a Visitors and Convention Bureau.  The historical Beltonian Theater is scheduled for renovation, bringing back a bit of nostalgia to the community.

In September 2006, Belton was nominated by the National League of Cities as a finalist in the 2006 Awards for Municipal Excellence.  The Texas Municipal League recognized Belton’s revitalization efforts at its 94th annual conference in Austin .

HOWEVER, Belton is best known throughout the state for its annual Fourth of July parade, carnival and rodeo which draws about 50,000 people.

Other attractions include the Bell County Expo Center , Belton Lake , Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir and Nature in Lights during the Christmas season.
